Multiple-use protected areas are critical to equitable and effective conservation

چکیده

Protected areas are widely used to stem biodiversity loss, with global conservation policy mandating their use in meeting area-based targets, such as the recent target protect 30% of Earth’s surface by 2030. Over last two decades, role multiple-use and other protected targets has increased, now representing 55% terrestrial 75% marine globally. Given substantial contributions we review evidence goals. We found that can be effective conserving more likely under equitable governance arrangements than strict counterparts. Our results show provide important environmental socio-economic benefits needed achieve 2030 target. Closing knowledge gaps around when where they most is ensure further growth conserved estate meets

Effective and Equitable Supply of Gasoline to Impacted Areas in

6 The focus of this research is on supplying gasoline after a natural disaster. There are two 7 aspects for this work: determination of which gas stations should be provided with generators 8 (among those that do not have electric power) and determination of a delivery scheme that 9 accounts for increased demand due to lack of public transportation and considerations such as 10 equity. We devel...

Conservation Biology: Beyond Marine Protected Areas

Socioeconomic and ecological analyses of eleven coral reef conservation efforts make clear that marine protected areas are not the answer, and that in fact support of local communities is far more important than some government mandated 'fishing closure'. Apparently there are marine 'paper parks' just as there are terrestrial 'paper parks'.

Protected areas and prospects for endangered species conservation in Canada.

Reserve networks figure prominently in conservation strategies that aim to reduce extinction rates. We tested the effectiveness of the current reserve network at protecting species at risk in Canada, where relatively extensive wilderness areas remain. We compared numbers of terrestrial species at risk included in existing reserves to randomly generated networks with the same total area and numb...

Conservation and development Evidence from Thai protected areas

Protected areas are a key tool for conservation policy but their economic impacts are not well understood. This paper presents new evidence about the local effects of strictly protected areas in Thailand, combining data on socioeconomic outcomes from a poverty mapping study with satellite-based estimates of forest cover. The selective placement of protected areas is addressed by controlling for...

Conservation value of multiple-use areas in East Africa.

Despite wide agreement that strictly protected areas (World Conservation Union categories I-III) are the best strategy for conserving biodiversity, they are limited in extent and exclude many species of key conservation importance. In contrast, multiple-use management areas (categories IV-VI), comprising >60% of the world's protected-area network, are often considered of little value to biodive...
